There are a few things you need to be aware of before renting a car in a foreign country.
Always try and rent through a local travel agent or reputable internet site such as Expedia or Travelocity. Request a written reservation and rate you will pay (in local currency).
Find out if you will need an international drivers license (call your DMV or AAA), or if your state license will do.
You will often get a tiny car with no air conditioning, radio, manual transmission etc., upgrades are not at all common in other lands.
Find out what insurance is needed. The author once rented a car in Jamaica and was surprised to find that there was an additional $1,400.00 charged as a deposit against damage. Be smart and know in advance what rates and regulations are.
Find out about business hours. Some countries virtually shut down in the afternoon for "siesta" time (I found this one out the hard way too). Lunch in some countries can last until 4pm!
In almost all cases in other countries, you must return the vehicle to the same place your rented it from unless other arrangements have been made. Be careful, you may get charged a hefty fee if you return it to someplace where a driver must be hired to return it to the renting agency.
Carry all rental papers with you at all times! This is important.
Will you be comfortable driving on the opposite side of the road? Know before you go.
Ask about fuel costs. Gasoline can cost more than $5 and $6 per gallon in some countries.
Before you get into the car, do a thorough inspection and do not accept the car unless every ding and scratch is noted in writing and that you get a signed copy from the rental agent. When you return the car, ask the agent to verify that you have not damaged the car and get a copy of your final bill right then and there. If you are in a hurry because you are late for your flight, you may end up paying big bucks for damage that you didn't cause. Arrive early and be careful.
Find out about local customs. Leaving a key in the ignition in Berlin is considered bad manners.
Some car rental agencies in other countries can be located off side streets in garages or other equally confusing locations. Find out where they are and be comfortable with directions and locations before leaving. - 25 Views - View Comments (0)
