Would you like to have dinner at the Captain's table? Would you like and invitation to the Captains special cocktail party? Flowers in your room when you arrive and even gifts?
Can do. Step one is to request this from your travel agent. They can get you VIP treatment simply by writing the cruise line and requesting it. It also helps if you have reserved a more expensive cabin. You can still get great treatment in an economy cabin, but the more you spend, the more you are likely to receive in amenities.
Always book the second sitting for meals on cruise lines. You will not have to rush if you are touring, you will have more time to enjoy your meal and you will not have as much free time on your hands before the evenings festivities begin.
Have your travel agent reserve seating for you if possible in the dining room near the Captains table. This is usually towards the center of the dining area. If this isn't possible, speak to the maitre de as soon as you can upon arriving and request a favorable location. Be sure you tip them.
It also helps to reserve a table that seats six or more. It is easier to excuse yourself from a table with two or more couples than a table with just one other couple or dining pair. If you do not like your dining companions, ask the maitre de to please make other arrangements for you (again tipping them) immediately. Do not wait until the 2nd or 3rd day, change tables the first day if necessary.
Speak with the dining captain and waiter as soon as you can comfortably do so upon boarding. Your goal is to find out what the chef's specialties are and to order them far enough in advance to guarantee the best meals possible.
Be sure and tip the dining room captain early and let them know that you appreciate good service and that there will be more coming.
Tip your dining room waiter in advance as well, roughly half the total amount you would tip at the end of the cruise and let him know that there will be more forthcoming and that you appreciate and reward good service. Your waiter can provide you with all sorts of extras, from pistachios to late night fudgesicles if desired. Be sure and let him know in advance if you have any particular cravings or needs (such as a piece of dark chocolate after meals, like the author requests).
