The first thing you need to be aware of before booking on of these incredibly popular cruises is that you need to have a flexible schedule. If you have to leave on a certain date or return on a certain date, we have to recommend that you skip this one.
Ships that carry cargo have but one priority - get the cargo loaded safely and on to its intended destination. If this means waiting few days (in some cases even weeks) to get the intended cargo aboard, then you must simply wait. Do not bitch to anyone and do not bother to ask for a refund. It is not going to happen.
Roll with the flow and enjoy instead. You will already be on board and will usually be given the right to go ashore and explore as desired. Just be sure and communicate with the ship so that they don't leave without you. Be aware, delays could happen at each or any port along the way. Once you know this and accept it, you might even find yourself looking forward to it.
If there is a delay in departure, you will not be charged any more or any less. In fact, any delay actually reduces your per diem vacation costs. You will be fed etc., during any delays in departure. With the right attitude and depending upon the port you sail from, this could be a great advantage or grand adventure.
These cruises are usually priced considerably lower than voyaging upon the cruise lines. The food is usually simple but almost always excellent, the quarters are nearly always quite good, and you get more time in most ports.
Cargo carriers usually only carry 6 to 12 passengers so you have a greater opportunity to know your fellows and since they are as adventurous as you are, chances are you will likely get along with all or most quite well. It does help to be both flexible and amenable however, there is a risk of traveling with someone you may not really care for.
You may need to be aware of health restrictions. Some boats (less than 12 passengers) may not even be required to have a doctor on board. Check first, especially if you have any medical concerns whatever.
When you make your reservation, you must pay a deposit and the balance is usually due one month prior to scheduled departure date. If you have to cancel, you will likely get a refund only if the ship is able to sell your space before sailing.
Due to these and other restrictions and concerns, we must recommend that you book a cruise like this only with an agency that is familiar with freight and cargo cruises.
